Breeding Canaries at Home, How to Do It

In order to breed canaries you need to follow a few simple steps:

The Cage

Although you might already have a birdthe cage you have may most likely won’t be the right one for breeding canaries.

If you want to breed canaries, then you will have to get one that’s specifically designed for breeding. They have compartments and a divider placed in the middle of the cage to not allow the two birds can’t see each other but hear each other.

This divider consists of two parts, one opaque and a wire grid one. Both play an important role for reproduction and breeding canaries, which will be covered later on in this article.

Choose Your Canaries

After analyzing the behaviors of the canaries, choose the two you would like to pair up. Remember, their physical traits will influence how the babies turn out. So make sure you take the color, beauty, and shape of the canaries into consideration before picking them out. This is very important because there are several varieties, especially when it comes to choosing one for yourself, for someone else or for even selling them.

Have Everything Ready for Them

Don’t wait until you get the canaries before getting everything necessary to make a nest. Remember, you’ll now need two water bottles, two feeders, and duplicates of any other object that a canary might need.

Don’t forget that females need a source of calcium —  such as a cuttlebone —  and some pelleted food for the babies. Once you have everything ready before getting your canaries, then you can start breeding them.

Help Them Start Mating

The first thing you need to do is put each canary on a different side of the cage with the two separators, one opaque and one wire grid. However, there is not a single problem if you prefer only using the opaque one. Keep both of the canaries separated for around 10 to 15 days, so they can listen to each other without seeing one another. By doing this, you can get awaken their interest in each other.

Once this time has passed, you can then remove the opaque separator and leave grid wire cage separator so they can see each other.  Once again, have them spend another  10 to 15 days separated. During this time, feed the female the pelleted food so she gets used to eating it.

The Moment Has Arrived

After one month, the moment has finally arrived to remove the separator and let the canaries be together. Their interest in each other will have grown so much that they won’t waste any time to mate and they’ll be mating for almost two weeks.

Once they’re mating, make sure to provide all the material necessary for them to make a nest so the female can lay her eggs. With that said, you can tell that breeding canaries is nothing complicated. By following these steps, you’ll have little canaries in your house in no time.
