Last update: 15 April, 2018

Chihuahuas are one of those breeds you either love or hate. However, few people can resist their charms and keep from smiling at them when seeing one on the street. Today we’ll learn more about this breed, both physically and inwardly. There’s no doubt you’ll fall in love with Chihuahuas!

Origen of Chihuahuas

Although, the origin of this breed has not yet been defined, everything seems to be pointing at Mexico.  They area allegedly the ancestors of the Techichi, a breed of dogs raised by Native Mexicans hundreds of years ago. Now do you see why there’s a Mexican state named Chihuahua?

Around the twentieth century, the inhabitants of a town in this state began to sell these dogs. Although, they were really a mixture of Techichi breeds, they promoted them as the oldest Techichi dogs with Aztec traits. This seemed to please American travelers, who soon began to call the dogs “Chihuahuas” due to their origin.

Characteristics

Chihuahuas, what a wonderful breed.

The best known characteristic of these friendly dogs is definitely their size. They are small but muscular and their legs are thin but strong. Their heads are round, and are sometimes extremely large in proportion to their bodies.

You can find them in nearly any color: white, black, chocolate brown, gold…

Personality

Some people believe Chihuahuas have bad tempers, but the truth is that´s far from reality. Chihuahuas area very affectionate and sociable dogs if  they are rasied to be so.

A Chihuahua´s personality will depend on their human family and environment . Even though, they may be loving, Chihuahuas are known for being stubborn and always getting away with stuff. They´re very observant and will run from anything they don´t like. They love being with other Chihuahuas.

Special Care

There are many things to say about taking care of Chihuahuas. People started to gradually believe Chihuahuas have fragile stomachs, including other similar myths.
However, this breed doen´t need any more care than a normal dog. They like running, playing, and being in the fresh air, but they adapt easy being indoors. Just be careful not to pamper them too much.  They can  become a bit spoiled and whiny. Anyway, enjoy your Chihuahua!

Tips about buying a Chihuahua

You know we are in favor of adoption, but unfortunately the selling of some breeds – – such as  Chihuahuas – – is a profitable business. Therefore it might be very difficult to adopt one, and you may have to buy one.

Before buying one, you must consider several factors, especially purchasing one online. We do not recommend doing that, because you can only fall in love at first sight when you meet your pet face to face.

Consider the following when purchasing one online:

Chihuahua are so cute
  • Seller’s involvement. He/she should not just place a price on the dog, but be willing to do a follow-up to guarantee the dog is in good health.
  • Look at forums and see what people have to say about the kennel.
  • Make sure the website is legal. In other words, the puppies have everything necessary and mandatory in order to be sold.
  • The seller must guarantee and prove the dog has no hereditary diseases.
  • Make sure not to get the puppy before it´s two months old, because it needs to time to be spent with its mother.

There usally is not any legal problems when buying one at the store. So, the main thing will be finding out which Chihuahua to fall in love with. What´s actually important is the first impression, i.e. be sure the dog is good at socializing with other dogs and people.

Take note of the way it acts when being approached, because a dog that does not have a good impression will be timid and scared. Do not think that just seeing it calm means it will be a better puppy. A puppy must be friendly, active and energetic, because it is still a baby.
