Home Remedies for Dogs

If you don't want to spend a lot of money or if you're trying to avoid chemicals, there are a variety of home remedies available for your dog's condition.

It’s quite possible that your dog may one day suffer from fleas, itchy skin, knotted hair, or some other kind of problem. And whilst there are thousands of remedies that you can buy from shops or veterinary clinics, there are other options too, including home remedies for dogs.

Maybe you don’t want to spend a lot of money. Perhaps you don’t like the way they smell. Or maybe you just prefer natural options instead of so many chemicals. Whatever your reason, there are plenty of home remedies for dogs available.

To help you out, we’ve prepared a list of home remedies for dogs that won’t cost much and will even make your dog smell better. They’ll even spread the smell around the house!

Home remedies for dogs

Fleas

There are a few different home remedies for dogs to treat fleas. We’ve listed them below with instructions.

• Citrus. Science doesn’t know exactly why, but fleas hate the smell of citrus fruit. Simply rub your dog with half a lemon, orange, grapefruit or something similar (you can use the skin as well), and the fleas will go running, never to come back. Not only that but your house will have a lovely citrus smell that even the best floor cleaner won’t give you.
• Yeast. Of course, we’re not about to tell you to cover your dog in yeast, the poor thing! In this case, the yeast works internally. Add a little to his food and say goodbye to fleas.
• Deep clean. Fleas are not just really annoying, but really, really small. So, before you try any home remedy, we recommend you carry out a deep clean of all the things your dog uses. Clean his bed and sheets, and vacuum your chairs, cushions, and rugs. This will be a great help in getting fleas out of your house.

Skin irritation

This can be caused by a number of different things. As a result, we’ve listed a few home remedies for dogs that can be helpful. But first, check with your vet that it’s not a symptom of something more serious.

• Chamomile. Make a chamomile infusion and pour it into a bottle. Once lukewarm, put it in the fridge until it’s nice and cold. Then apply it to your dog’s skin with gentle circular massages.
• Vitamin E. Vitamin E helps alleviate skin irritation and maintain skin health. You can find it in pill form and they’re perfectly safe for your dog. However, it’ll act much quicker and alleviate the skin if you can get it in an oil. Apply it in the same way as the chamomile remedy above.
• Oats. Oats are full of good properties. Put plenty of oat flakes and cold water into a blender. Liquidize them and pour through a sieve. It’ll be easier to apply if you pour it into a spray bottle. Now you’ve got an instant alleviator for your dog’s itchy skin.

Eye irritation

This can actually be very common in dogs.

• Metal food bowls. Something as simple as changing a plastic food bowl for a metal one can make all the difference. Most of the time, this type of irritation is caused by small bacteria that get into the cracks and scratches of a plastic bowl. Change it for a metal one and the problem is gone.
• Chamomile. Make a chamomile infusion using two tea bags, and let the tea bags cool. Then apply them to your dog’s eyes to soothe the irritation.

As with any home remedy, these home remedies for dogs can help if your dog is suffering, but you should always visit your vet to make sure that it’s not something more serious.
