The Basset Hound who Stuck with His Tiny Owner
Loyalty is, without a doubt, a dog’s most distinctive quality. And, it is in stories like these where we can see that most clearly. For example: a Basset Hound dog who showed selfless love for his 6-month old owner. Want to know more?
Basset Hound Comes Home
John and Mary are dog lovers. That’s why they adopted a beautiful Basset Hound puppy to share their life with when they got married. It was not in their plans to have a baby, at least at that point in time. They wanted to enjoy their marriage and the new member of their little family.
The beautiful Basset Hound grew up happily with his human parents. And, they went on to love each other more and more each day. A few years later, though, Mary made an important announcement to the family. They needed to go shopping for a stroller, because she was pregnant!
The family dog (we do not know his name, so we will call him Basset), did not know why his owners were laughing and crying all at once. But, he could not stop jumping around their feet.
It wasn’t long before Basset saw that Mary’s tummy was growing. The bigger the baby got, the sweeter he was with Mary. He walked up and curiously sniffed her belly attempting to figure out what was going on.
Several months went by and one day, she came home crying from a doctor’s appointment. She was informed that there were complications in her pregnancy. And, everything seemed to indicate that the baby wouldn’t be healthy.
Basset wanted to play, but soon realized that John and Mary were crying inconsolably. Needless to say, Basset knew that it wasn’t the right time.
Nevertheless, their hope didn’t fade and they continued leading a normal life throughout the pregnancy. That is, until the day finally arrived: the much expected day when they would see the their little Nora’s beautiful face.
And Along Came Nora . . .
Everything seemed to go well. And, Nora was a gorgeous baby. Finally, the family was growing! However, doctors warned John and Mary that they needed to be alert and vigilant about her care.
Basset loved Nora. He refused to leave her side while she was in the crib. After all, he had made a new friend. Everything appeared to be going well. That is, until Nora turned five months old. She fell unconscious and was immediately rushed to the hospital. Then, they diagnosed her with a stroke.
Basset went with them to the hospital. He refused to stay home and got in the car, despite orders from his owners not to do so. John and Mary had just one burning question: How could such a small baby suffer a stroke?
There were no explanations, but one thing was clear: Nora’s brain was so damaged that they had to induce a coma. All of which was horrible news for the new parents. Now, all they could do was wait.
Basset was determined, though. He was not about to let his family go through it all alone. He laid on Nora’s bed and didn’t budge from her side until the little girl eventually passed away.
After everything was said and done, they discovered that Nora was born with pulmonary hypertension, which is an incurable disease. Despite all their efforts, they sadly announced the little one’s death.
Pulmonary hypertension consists of a considerable narrowing of the arteries that carry blood from the lungs to the heart. When these become narrow, the blood can not pass. Thus, this produces an amount of pressure that inevitably leads to death.
However, despite the sadness that this story provokes, Basset’s faithfulness, loyalty, friendship and self-sacrificing love towards little Nora and her family is just another sign that dog is a man’s best friend. Even more than man himself.
No matter the circumstances, your dog will never leave you. It is very likely that he or she will instead surprise you with their actions, as was the case with this fur baby with so much love to give.
