The Caucasian Shepherd dog is a truly beautiful dog to behold. This dog’s origins go back to the great dogs of Tibet. They are also faithful companions and excellent watchdogs. In this article, we’ll tell you all about this massive dog. Let’s take a look!

The origin of the Caucasian Shepherd Dog

This breed is believed to come from the first Tibetan Mastiff. This is most likely where they inherited their impressive size and bulky coat. Similar to some other breeds, this is the result of breeding the fittest specimens to create the breed we know today.

However, their size has made them an ideal animal to work as a shepherding dog. They have been used to maintain herds in the mountainous areas of Caucasus for decades. Their size also allows them to face off against wolves if necessary. During the last few years, however, the Caucasian Shepherd dog has become popular as a pet.

Characteristics of the Caucasian Shepherd dog

When talking about the Caucasian Shepherd dog, we’re referring to one of the largest breeds of dogs that exist. They can grow up to 2 feet tall and weigh 110 pounds in some cases.

This breed also has a strong body structure, with a broad back and muscular build. Two characteristics features of the Caucasian Shepherd are its compact head and strong, hairy tail. Despite this animal’s size, however, they are agile and swift.

This breed’s coat has several layers of smooth and abundant hair. This protects them against any inclement weather and can also be a form of protection against predators.

There are three different variations of coat within this breed. It can have long hair, medium-length hair, or short hair. The color of their coats may also vary slightly from white to brown or black.

What about their temperament?

Based on their size, some people might think that they’ll have a difficult or aggressive temperament. However, this breed is typically even-keeled and friendly with proper training.

This doesn’t mean, however, that they are submissive. These are proud dogs and will sometimes act independently. However, if training is carried out from a young age, you can balance out their behavior and have a noble, quiet companion.

These dogs are also extremely loyal and have a strong protective instinct. This means that they won’t hesitate to be aggressive with strangers. Although it makes them excellent watchdogs, you’ll need to learn to control this behavior if they occur often.

What care do they require?

The Caucasian Shepherd is an extraordinary dog, but it doesn’t adapt well to all environments. Take into account these recommendations if you’re considering adopting one:

  • These dogs don’t do well in apartments or closed spaces. They need to run and feel free.
  • This breed requires a lot of physical and psychological attention.
  • Their coats need intensive daily care.
  • Training them can be difficult, so we recommend you look for someone with previous experience with this breed.
  • They are big dogs, meaning they eat a lot! Keep this in mind when considering the financial commitment involved.
