The Pyrenean Shepherd is one of the smallest in the family of herding dogs. Their energetic personality makes them ideal for life in the countryside. Continue reading to learn more about them.

The Pyrenean Shepherd

As you can imagine, this breed is from the French Pyrenees. It’s one of the oldest breeds in France and, although some believe its ancestors are Asian, their exact origin is unknown to us.

Their mental acuity and protective personality got them the role of messenger dogs for the French troops during World War I. The breed acquired monetary value between 1920 and 1925. It happened at the time when people built kennels to promote and maintain their characteristics.

Today, the Pyrenean Shepherd’s excellent sense of direction and protective instinct make them an excellent guide and defender of a flock.

Morphology and characteristics

The most distinctive feature of this breed is its coat, which varies depending on its origin. Thus, there are two varieties, the long-haired Pyrenean shepherd and the smooth-faced one.

Their athletic build and small size allow them to run at high speeds and they can release large amounts of energy. The Pyrenean Shepherd has a restless character and requires open spaces to run around and exercise their characteristic vitality.

This kind of dog will become anxious in small spaces, such as apartments. Also, they can’t stand being alone. Of course, you don’t need to have a house in the Alps for this dog to be happy. However, they do need access to green and wide areas in their immediate environment.

Their slender figure is particularly suitable for running. They’re sort of like hunting dogs. Also, their temperament and complexion are similar to the Australian Shepherd Dog. mainly in that they both have a similarly athletic body and a characteristic coat. A medium-sized animal, its height won’t exceed 3.1 feet.

Exercise and care of a Pyrenean Shepherd

Every self-respecting dog owner takes their dog out for daily exercise. This breed, born to herd and protect their animals from natural predators, such as wolves, needs constant physical and mental stimulation.

Some figure

Experts recommend that you have previous experience as a dog owner before considering this dog as a pet. Training classes and dog sports such as frisbee or tug-of-war will keep them happy and relaxed.

The Pyrenean Shepherd has a tendency to be overweight and, of course, this is due to a sedentary lifestyle. We advise you to let them run free for an hour a day, at least.

In addition, a balanced diet that includes every group of nutrients is essential to keep them in shape. Even so, we recommended you play sports with them. Many people think that leftovers are an economical and effective way to feed a pet. However, this might not be a complete and balanced diet and it could negatively impact their well-being.

Hygiene habits

Any dog is a potential transmitter and carrier of parasites and diseases, especially if they live in a rural environment. Only a veterinarian can give you detailed information about their state of health.

However, following a series of guidelines is the best possible preventative measure to guarantee that your Pyrenean Shepherd is healthy.

As we said above, consult a vet to obtain more detailed information about the health of your dog.

Along these lines, here’s some advice for any Shepherd dog owner who lives in a rural environment:

  • You must deworm your dog regularly with a pill treatment every month and a half or 2 months
  • Use an anti-parasite collar or a similar product on your dogs
  • Dogs play, roll, jump and swim, and the Pyrenean Shepherd’s coat is thick so it’s hard to clean.
  • Remove any branches, thorns, and mud so they won’t accumulate. This is because their coat is ideal for parasites to burrow in it.
  • Brush the dog regularly. A seasonal haircut is a great ally for your dog, especially during a hot summer.

With this advice and a little patience and confidence, your Pyrenean Shepherd will be healthy and happy.
