The oldest social theories say that work is exclusively a human activity. However, a growing number of studies and experiments claim that dogs in the workplace can provide a number of benefits.

The increase in pressure at work can bring about increased levels of stress. Bringing dogs into the workplace appears to be an excellent option for creating a more relaxed atmosphere.

What are the Benefits of Bringing a Dog to Work?

The introduction of animals to the workplace is controversial in many countries, even in those where it is already allowed. Amongst other things, this is because there are legal issues and questions of hygiene.

The First Initiatives for Dogs in the Workplace

The United Kingdom was a pioneer in this type of initiative. In the year 2017, pets and their owners celebrated 20 years of working alongside each other. In the United States, the initiative is still new, but already more than forty-thousand businesses label themselves as dog-friendly. Other countries such as Canada, Australia, and New Zealand also encourage this practice.

In Spain, the initiative to have dogs in the workplace is widely debated. Even businesses that specialise in pet products have restrictions on animals in the workplace.

The Benefits of Bringing Dogs in the Workplace

    Animals have the ability to relax us and cheer us up. Because of this, they are used in many therapies for motor disabilities or psychological conditions. The inclusion of dogs in the workplace can improve the mood and reduce stress.
  2. An emotionally healthy environment
    Quiet people provide a healthier environment when living together. Human beings tend to be more relaxed in the company of their pets. This will improve the relationships between colleagues.
  3. Increased productivity
    Employees who are healthy and stress-free are more productive. It is not just a question of numbers either. People perform better when they feel comfortable. Therefore, their quality of work improves with quality of life at work.
  4. Better Work-life Balance
    Many people have difficulties balancing their work obligations with responsibilities in their personal lives. A pet requires care and attention. Bringing a dog into the workplace reduces any worries that an owner might have, particularly because they can look after them whilst still working.
  5. Pets are not as lonely
    Many pets spend a lot of time on their own whilst their owners are at work during the day. This encourages them to be sedentary and can cause depression. Dogs in the workplace are not as lonely and live alongside their owners and other animals. Therefore, your faithful friend’s health will be much better for it.

Are There Requirements for Having Dogs in the Workplace?

Firstly, you will be asked to look after your dog’s hygiene and make sure that they have a toilet. Since it is a public space, you will need to take extra care over their hygiene to avoid any contamination.

Another related question is care around any chemical products used in the workplace. Highly toxic substances or strong-smelling chemicals can be a problem for your dog, provoke allergies, or even make them ill. You need to be conscious that your dog’s well-being is your responsibility.

As for the business, they should make sure that the workplace is suitable for receiving pets.

Obviously, any pet that comes with us to work has to have access to a water bowl and a food bowl. Therefore, you need to have a space in the workplace to keep these things. Otherwise, they could get hyperactive or anxious and cause damage to objects in the workplace, such as, tools, furniture or equipment.

Your pet will also need sufficient space to be able to move around comfortably.

Some Precautions to Consider

For the owner’s part, they are responsible for their pet’s health.

  • Health. Your pet should be up-to-date with vaccinations and anti-parasite treatments. You will not be allowed to take sick dogs or dogs with parasites into the workplace.
  • Waste. Dogs in the workplace need a place where they can go to the toilet, or at least time when you can take them for a walk to do their business. If you do not do this, they may do it in the workplace and cause a problem with your colleagues!
  • Vets Appointment. It is best if you take your pet to the vet to have a check-up before taking them into the workplace.
  • The Owner Also Needs to Take Responsibility for Their Pet’s Socialisation. A process of socialisation is highly recommended for teaching an animal to live peacefully around other people and animals. Obviously, an aggressive animal will not be allowed into the workplace.

With regard to being around each other, dogs in the workplace are wonderful company and a great stimulus for performance. The business, owners, and pets all stand to gain from it.
