Some people are more prone to flea bites than others. If you are tired of being bitten and suffering from infected wounds due to so much scratching, we recommend that you read the following article, in which we’ll tell about you some home remedies for treating this problem.
Why do fleas bite me?
Fleas are small parasites that feed on the blood of mammals, especially dogs and cats. But, of course, they can also bite people. It is similar to what happens with mosquitoes; certain humans are more vulnerable to mosquito bites (due to body odor, clothing they wear, blood type, etc.).
They usually bite on the feet and on the legs, that is to say, the places closest to the ground. While fleas can jump several centimeters, they cannot reach the knees or higher. If they are on the couch or in the bed, they may bite other parts of the body.
Remedies for flea bites
If you have flea bites, the first step is to wash the area with lukewarm water and neutral soap. Afterwards, dry the area with a cloth, tapping lightly to avoid irritating your skin. It is essential to cover the bite in order to avoid scratching it, because it could become infected. These are some of the most effective homemade recipes to treat bites:
You can use a bag of any tea you have at home (black, green, chamomile, etc.). It’s very simple. Heat water as if you are going to drink the tea, and pour it in a cup with the tea bag. Wait a few minutes, remove the bag, and let it cool down to room temperature at least.
Soak a gauze or cloth in the tea and apply it to the bite with gentle pats. Cover with a bandage. Repeated several times a day.
2. Basil Poultice
Basil not only serves to give flavor and aroma to your meals, but also to soothe the irritation and itching caused by flea bites. Wash a couple of leaves from the plant and mash with a little water. Make a paste and apply it to the bite. Leave on for about 15 minutes, or until it reaches room temperature. You can also leave it on for more time, covering it with gauze.
3. Aloe Vera
It’s essential to have an aloe plant at home. It is suitable for all types of skin wounds and infections, including flea bites. Aloe Vera is a natural healer that soothes itching and swelling in minutes. It’s also very easy to use. Just cut a stalk or leaf horizontally (beware of the thorns) and remove the gel.
4. Coconut Ointment
This rich tropical fruit is used to desinflame the rashes caused by fleas. In this case you will use the pulp. Put in the blender with a little bit of water. Mix well to form a kind of cream. Apply on the bite and wrap with a bandage for an hour. After an hour, rinse. Repeat twice a day.
5. Oatmeal bath
Oatmeal or oat flakes help when we have rashes, irritation or stings on our skin. If the fleas have bitten your feet, you can put them in a bowl of warm water with one or two tablespoons of this cereal for 15 minutes. If the bites are on your back, for example, you will have to use the tub. The procedure is similar, although you will need more oats.
This is an excellent antiseptic remedy that can be consumed or used topically. In this case, you will apply it on the rash and let it sit for about 15 minutes. Then rinse with warm water.
7. Sodium bicarbonate (baking soda)
Place one tablespoon of baking soda and one tablespoon of water in a container. Mix well to form a paste and place on the bite. After 15 minutes, rinse with cold water. You will notice how quickly the irritation is relieved.
