Puppy Love Story: I Thought I Didn't Want a Pet

My life was very busy… or so I thought.  Even though I was lonely, I never thought about adopting a pet.  I’d never experienced a puppy love story of my own. Many people recommended it to me, some others attempted to give me one, but I never went through with it.  I was always thinking about not having enough time to take care of her, or all the work that it would be, and this made me go back on my decision… and then you appeared.

Was I selfish? Yes, I don’t deny it. But it’s hard to be generous when you don’t understand what it’s like.  But one day… one day you appeared and changed everything.

When I found you

Today started just like any other day.  I got up and went for a run because yes, I always go running.  However, when I got back to the parking lot to get my car, I stumbled over something.  It was a small box that spoke.  I say it spoke because when I accidentally bumped into it I heard a small sound.

I wanted to see where the noise was coming from, and there you were. That was the start of the puppy love story.  I couldn’t even see very well what kind of animal you were because your white, shining hair covered your face and the shape of your body.

However, it didn’t take long for you to move and see who opened the box, or maybe you thought that someone had finally come to rescue you.

I’ll be honest.  I never told you, but it was your eyes I fell in love with.  I didn’t hesitate a second to take you home with me.  While we were going up in the elevator, I couldn’t help but wonder what kind of person could leave such a small being so helpless without food or water, left to their fate.

I believe more and more that fate brought us together in our real life puppy love story.

You appeared and we began our life together

I didn’t want to go to work that day because I couldn’t stop looking at you. But, I had to leave.  So, I left you at home and I couldn’t think about anything else. Basically, I was going to run an errand after work. But, I was so excited to see you that I decided to take you with me and that on the way we could look for a good veterinarian and to get you vaccinated.

Was someone listening to me?  I had never wanted a dog… until you appeared.

Actually, I remember that first day you stayed at home.  I won’t lie – you didn’t start out on the right foot as my new roommate.  You peed everywhere, you ate my slippers and I got complaints from the neighbors about your whining.  Despite being a perfectionist, it all just made me laugh rather than getting angry.

Coexistence wasn’t easy, I can’t deny, but little by little I learned to compromise and be less obsessive about certain things. And, you learned what your place is and the rules you needed to respect.

Seeing you grow up, having someone to talk to when you get home, someone to play with, someone to go out with.  You changed my life.  You appeared and  changed my world.  In fact, I can no longer imagine life without you.  My friends couldn’t believe I had a dog when they came over to visit.

But then you and I laughed at their faces when they saw you, how surprised they were to see you were real. And, they realized the importance of this puppy love story.

I still get so angry when I hear people say that animals have nothing to teach us.  If they only knew how much my life has changed!  If I could only show them!

Today I am a different person because of everything you have taught me.  Since you appeared, I have learned to share, to be generous, to think of someone other than myself, to love and be loved, to take responsibility and so many other things.

Because of this and all the happiness you have given me, today I want to thank you for this real life puppy love story.  Since you appeared, my home, my life and me as a person are different.
