In the summer, due to the high temperatures, it’s important to pay more attention to your pet. For example, your dog’s legs and ears are especially vulnerable to overheating. However, rather than considering spending more time with your pet as something negative, you can use it to motivate you to have fun with your dog in the summer.

Things to do with your dog in the summer

The beach

Just like you love to go to the beach in the summer, your dog will love it too! Most dogs love the water, and it helps them cool down on hot days. So, if you have a beach nearby, take your dog to run on the sand and play in the water. However, make sure the beach allows dogs.

The beach is a great place to have fun with your dog in the summer.

The best time to hit the beach with your pooch is early in the morning or in the late afternoon. That way, you won’t bother any other beach visitors. In some places, dogs are allowed on the beaches at any time of day.

However, in other places, there are beaches that allow dogs only at certain times of day, some beaches which are just for dogs, and some beaches where dogs aren’t allowed. On the other hand, if you don’t have a beach nearby, you can always let your dog splash around in a baby pool.

If you do have a pool at home, let your dog join in on the fun too! There are plenty of games to play with your dog in the summer, such as throwing balls into the water for him to fetch.

A day in the mountains

A good walk or hike in the mountains is a great way to interact with your dog in the summer. You’ll both get exercise, some fresh air, and your dog can be off-leash, discovering all kinds of new smells.

Walks at night

Taking daily walks with your dog is mandatory. However, in the summer season, it’s best to take long walks when it’s not as hot outside. This is generally in the early morning or at night when the sun goes down.

Also, if you decide to hit a restaurant or bar with an outdoor patio, you might be able to bring your dog with you, as long as he’s on a leash and well-behaved.

Hangouts with other dogs

Another good idea is to meet up with other dog owners for these outdoor activities, such as hiking. You’ll get some social time and your dog will love interacting with new friends.

Canine water parks

There are more and more canine water parks opening worldwide. For instance, in Barcelona, there is a new water park just for dogs. These are great places for owners to have fun with their dog in the summer. Best of all, everything is adapted for dogs. There are swimming pools for small dogs and larger ones for bigger pups. Some water parks even feature mini slides for your dog.

Travel

If you’re looking to travel with your dog, first you need to make sure that the place where you’re staying allows pets. Nowadays, there are more and more lodgings that allow pets. In fact, some even have specific facilities, such as special spaces for dogs and cats.

But how do you take your dog on a trip? The most practical way is a dog carrier that you put in the backseat or trunk. On the other hand, if you can’t use a carrier for whatever reason, make sure your dog is securely fastened with a special harness that attaches to your car’s seat belt.

Keep in mind that during the trip you’ll need to stop approximately every two hours so your dog can have a drink, relieve himself, stretch his legs, etc. Also, avoid leaving your dog inside the car.

If you do need to leave him in the car while you run inside to use the bathroom, make sure your care is in the shade with the windows down. You want to avoid heat stroke, which can have some serious consequences.

Culinary surprises

Another fun thing to do with your dog in the summer is to expand your culinary horizons. Making a special treat for your dog, with natural ingredients and a lot of love, is an ideal way to enjoy time together. There are many things you can make, such as muffins, ice cream, pancakes, cookies, etc.

You’ll enjoy cooking and your dog will love tasting your creations. Always make sure you use natural ingredients, but also consider things that your dog will enjoy. For example, some delicious chicken treats are sure to be a big hit!
