Can Technology Help You Understand Your Dog's Mood?

Last update: 17 October, 2019

In a world where technology is evolving faster than ever – and where it seems that life’s hardly worth living unless it’s through a smartphone – we’re not surprised to hear that tech companies have already begun working on apps for man’s best friend. In this article, we want to tell you about a new device that can help you understand your dog’s mood.

Bark ID: the app that can interpret your dog’s mood

Bark ID was developed by a Mexican advertising company, in collaboration with the Mexican National Council of Science and Technology. The app is able to interpret how your dog is feeling based on its barks.

Learning to understand your pet’s body language and the different sounds they make is one of the most fascinating aspects of owning a pet. Once you get to know them, however, you’ll realize that it’s not actually all that difficult to work out what they’re trying to tell you.

That said, this app can be extremely useful for first-time pet owners. You can even use it to monitor your dog’s feelings from a distance, so you can check up on them while you’re away from home.

With a little love and attention, interpreting your dog’s mood isn’t that complicated. However, any technology that can help owners understand their pet’s feelings in more detail could be of great benefit to our four-legged friends.

Bark ID uses 3 separate components:

  • Bark API: a platform that indicates how your pet is feeling, based on its bark.
  • Bark Catcher: which differentiates between barks and background noise.
  • Bark App: an interactive guide with tips and advice for caring for your pet.

However, if your pet decides to stay quiet, you’ll need to work out what it’s thinking for yourself. If you think your dog is unwell, you must seek veterinary attention as soon as possible.

A smart collar that detects your dog’s mood

But Bark ID isn’t the only canine translator on the market. You can also find similar products, such as Inupathy. While Bark ID consists of a back-pack like device which is used to monitor sound, Inupathy is more like a smart collar.

Inupathy also allows you to check on your dog’s mood in real time. The information recorded by the device is automatically sent to the app, where you’ll also find a daily log.

The collar was developed by a team of Japanese scientists. It works by monitoring the animal’s heart rate, changing color according to the dog’s mood. The software can even suggest games for you to play with your pet, according to how it’s feeling.

Tails: the best way to understand your pet

Other similar devices include Dubbed TailTalk. In this case, the device attaches your pet’s tail, and transmits data to your cellphone. As any owner will know, a dog’s tail can tell us a lot about how they’re feeling.

However, if you want to avoid annoying your pet with high tech gadgets, you’ll simply have to observe your pet closely, and spend time interacting with them. In doing so, you’ll quickly discover the infinite number of ways your dog communicates with you.

Eyes, ears, tail, and posture are all great sources of information when it comes to understanding how your pet is feeling, or what it wants. It’s also important to pay attention to barks, growls, and other noises.

So, whether you rely on your own knowledge, use technology to help you, or seek advice from an animal behavioralist, it’s always good to understand what your pet is trying to tell you.
